The latest in Virgin Radio’s cracking series of Sunset Sessions saw Scottish legends Travis deliver a brilliant set to a lucky live audience.

Following the release of their latest album, L.A. Times, the BRIT and Ivor Novello award-winning band played a selections of songs from the top of the tower on Friday 19th July.

The group, fronted by vocalist Fran Healy, played songs old and new to a thrilled crowd with the London skyline as a backdrop.

The band’s set featured their iconic single, Why Does it Always Rain on Me?, which was taken from their second album, The Man Who in 1999 and became the group's international breakthrough hit.

In a conversation with Virgin Radio’s Steve Denyer, Fran revealed, "It's the song that changed everything for us. Our manager was telling us that 'nobody wants to hear a song about the bloody weather.' We were debating with the record company about the next single.

"Like nobody saw it coming, really, nobody. But we knew it had something special."

Referring to a moment at Glastonbury 1999, when it started to rain just as they began playing the song, the singer said: “There was just that little moment, that little magical moment where it rained and everyone turned around at the same time and saw it, talked about it, and the next thing you know, the album starts floating up the charts again. And here we are."

The Travis Sunset Session featured another of their classic hits, Sing. The track was lifted from their third studio album, The Invisible Band, in 2001.

Having played the Sunset Session for Virgin Radio, and having recently been on the road in support of The Killers, Travis are heading out on a 12-date UK headline tour in December. “The thing with us, and we take great pride in this, is that we play it live. There's so much backing tracks right now in the music world,” Fran said when the band visited the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with webuyanycar recently.

“And our thing is, you know, when you go and see a band, you want to see them make mistakes. You want to see leads coming out and them stopping. There's a sort of polished professionalism at the moment that I'm the antithesis of. I love seeing a band just rocking up.”

The live set also included Gaslight, which is taken from new album, L.A. Times.

Travis previously performed live on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with webuyanycar, and their set included Flowers in the Window and new song Bus. Watch it here.

On Sunday 28th July at 7pm you can hear the Sunset Session on Virgin Radio UK, along with Fran and Dougie from the band chatting with Steve Denyer about the gig, their music and their tenth album L.A. Times, which is out now. For tickets to Travis’ December tour, visit travisonline.com.
