KT Tunstall plays live at Virgin Radio

KT Tunstall played an amazing live session on the Stool of Rock, including a classic from her back-catalogue and a tune from a brand new musical adaptation of the film Clueless.

The Scottish singer-songwriter joined the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with cinch to play live and talk about having written the music for the Clueless adaptation.

The musical has a two-week run in Bromley, where it will continue to be developed ahead of heading to the West-End in the future. The 1995 film starred Alicia Silverstone and Paul Rudd. On how she became involved with the musical, the artist told Chris: “I've been gigging, writing songs, releasing albums for 20 years, and you just get to a point where you want to flex other creative muscles and just challenge yourself to see what you can do.

“I went to see The Book of Mormon about 10 years ago, and I thought, ‘This seems really good fun’ and audiences are really open to all sorts of different subjects now, it's not just sort of the jazz hands, old school musicals.”

The artist continued: “I just put it out into the universe that that was something I wanted to do. And the phone rang. It was magical. And it was actually Glenn Slater, who's the lyricist. And we've done some stuff before and he asked if I wanted to jump on.”

KT played the title track from the new musical, which is an original composition she wrote with Grammy winner and three-time Tony Award nominee Slater. She confirmed to Chris that it was a “world exclusive”.

Speaking more about the musical, KT said: “It's so emotional. But also, the really fun thing about it is that we're basically making you feel like if you could get the cassette tape out of [lead character] Cher’s Jeep in the movie, what songs would be on that cassette tape? So it's all like referencing all these amazing 90 tunes."

She added: “The cool thing is, this is what’s called the workshop run, and so it's different every night, so you can buy tickets for every night and you'll get a slightly different show. We're tweaking it as we go.

“We really want to take you to a gig. You’re coming to a musical, but we want you to feel like you're at a gig. We're referencing N Sync and Alanis Morissette. All the fun, so the trousers will be flapping.”

While at the top of the tower, KT also played Suddenly I See. During the live acoustic version, the singer mashed up a bit of Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up. Watch it here:

Last month, KT posted a video on TikTok where she finally spoke to the man who played her ex boyfriend in her Other Side of the World music video from 2004. She explained: “I never met the dude. The directors went to New York, cast the hot dude, random hot dude, to be my ex-boyfriend. I never met him. I never went to New York. Five years later, I'm in a bar and there's a guy to my right and I'm like, ‘I know him. Who is he?’ And it came out of my mouth. I went, ‘Oh my God, you're my pretend ex boyfriend’. And it was him!

“As far as I remember, he didn't really know who I was, and that was that. And so on Tik Tok, I basically said, ‘Shall we try and find him?’ And we did. And so we then went live on Instagram and met this guy.

"He said he did know it was me, but I don't remember this, but I was apparently with another dude. And he wanted to ask me out for a drink, but he didn't because I was with someone.

“So I actually could have ended up dating the pretend ex-boyfriend in another life!"
