Mr Blobby is not going to be happy. The original costume from the 1990s was sold for a hand-wringing £62,000 — however, as with everything Blobby touches, it didn't quite go to plan.

Following the ever-escalating eBay auction, one winner got their hands on the iconic outfit and offered the jaw-dropping amount but pulled out of the sale within an hour.

The costume attracted 178 bids before the 'final' sale, which began at a humble £39.

“I thought it would get to a level of £100 perhaps — and so I was as shocked really that it reached the level it did,” said the former BBC employee seller.

"I think it was one of those things that was driven by social media,” they told BBC News.

“Ironically, it was being sold not to make money but to make space.

“I don’t think you can lose something you’ve never had."

The owner of the much-loved costume has decided not to put it back on the marketplace. While winning a bid on eBay means the user has committed to buy the item, the terms and conditions state it cannot enforce this by law.

Finding fame on BBC One's Saturday night show Noel’s House Party, the beloved character has both topped the charts and also been called one of the 'most irritating television characters' of all time.
