When it comes to putting Christmas lights up, are you something of a Grinch, or do you go all out to the extent that your home could probably be seen from space?
Well, if you love Christmas lights, you are in the majority, as a new poll has found that 73% of Brits feel that seeing decorative lights in the run up to Christmas affects their mood in a positive way.
The poll has been commissioned by Windsor Great Park Illuminated, which is the first-ever light trail in the historic Windsor Great Park. To unwrap what people really think about Christmas lights, they surveyed 2000 people across the UK.
If you don’t feel especially Christmassy during the process of getting your lights down from the loft and spending about a million hours detangling them, then don’t worry, because that will likely change as soon as you plug them in. Over three-quarters of people (76%) said that they feel festive magic and holiday excitement begins once seasonal lights have started illuminating our homes and our high streets.
However, for some UK citizens, the Christmas period can bring out a seriously competitive side. Over a third of people (36%) reckon that their neighbours should put more effort into their holiday light displays. So, if you’re wondering why your next-door neighbour has been giving you the evil eye recently, that could be the reason!
The majority of people (79%) enjoy a good Christmas stroll, presumably so they can judge all of their neighbours’ lights! Meanwhile, a whopping 82% of us like to walk off all the food we’ve been eating with a blast of fresh air in the woods or a romp across the countryside.
For those of us who like to combine a walk with some Christmas lights, the first-ever light trail is taking place in Windsor Great Park this year. Called Windsor Great Park Illuminated, the trail celebrates the natural beauty of the park with a selection of installations to fuel that festive feeling. Visitors will also be tempted by a selection of food and drink, as well as open fire pits for toasting marshmallows.
Set to the south of the town of Windsor on the border of Berkshire and Surrey, Windsor Great Park Illuminated is open now and will run until Sunday 9th January.
