In an interview with Australian news site nine.com.au, the Melbourne based flight attendant shared her hottest tips for packing effectively. Her most surprising trick was a super smart method of keeping your dirty shoes off of your clean clothes.

Michelle suggests grabbing a disposable shower cap and using it to cover the bottom of your shoes. This keeps the dirt on your soles from getting on the rest of your luggage. It’s more effective than just putting the shoes in a plastic bag, because the shower cap will stay firmly in place and avoid getting the tops of the shoes dirty too.

"This will help to protect your clothing and keep everything clean," Michelle explained to nine.com.au.

If you’re in luck you won’t even need to buy the shower caps, as plenty of hotels give them out for free.

This trick has been seconded by TikTok flight attendant influencer Kat Kamalani in her popular videos on top packing tips.

Kat also offers some super useful packing strategies. She recommends rolling your clothes instead of folding them to avoid creases and wrinkles, and to save space in your suitcase. She also suggests packing a spare big plastic bag to separate out your dirty clothes after you’ve worn them to keep everything else clean and make unpacking easier when you get home.

Both Kat and Michelle are big proponents of packing cubes, squarish zippered bags that allow you to sort your suitcase into separate compartments. This makes things easier to find when you arrive at your destination, and easier to repack at the end of your trip.
