Airplane food certainly has its critics, but it turns out that flight attendants can be just as critical of the meals that passengers bring onto flights, particularly the smell of some of them, and deservedly so!
Host of the Flight Attendant Podcast, an attendant who goes by the name of B, has revealed the three foods that she hates the smell of when she is on duty on a flight.
She said the worst smelling foods on a plane are broccoli, fish and hard boiled eggs. We’d have to say, we can see why these foods might be offensive to her nostrils. Who’s bringing their own cooked fish onto a plane? B’s fellow podcast host, and flight attendant, Uncle J, was in immediate agreement, saying: “Those are the worst actually.”
He added: “When you open the container the broccoli is in, if it’s cooked, oh my God, I want to barf. There’s something about the smell of cooked broccoli that’s been sitting in a bag or a container you open is not pleasant at all.
“I think I can handle the egg because I can immediately know what the egg is. But with broccoli it’s like, ‘is it bad? Is it okay?”
Continuing the conversation about smelly vegetables, B added another one to the smelly list, saying: “Cooked cauliflower is kind of the same as broccoli.”

She added another vegetable-based food to her growing collection of food smells that she dislikes, and this one is even one of her favourites to eat. “Kimchi,” she said. “I love kimchi, but please don’t eat it on the plane.”
We agree, anything that involves fermented vegetables probably isn’t ideal for an enclosed space!
So, before you next step onto a flight with some yummy food to help you get through the journey, have a think about the aromas that are going to emanate once you open up your container and consider the people around you. If you intend to feast on some kind of dish which comprises egg, broccoli, cauliflower, fish or kimchi, you might want to think again and just grab yourself a meal deal instead!
