In Good News we’ve featured sedum on bus stops, gardens on roofs and even a forest in a skyscraper, where do we from here? To Tuscany Airport in Florence, where the roof will soon have a vineyard on it!

Italians love about greening their buildings, with their famous vertical forest  - the Bosco Verticale  - in Milan being the current jewel in their crown.

So to celebrate its heritage as one of the wine capitals of the world, the International Airport in Florence will feature a 19-acre vineyard on top of its long, sloping roof.

A local, prestigious wine company will harvest the grapes and manage the vineyard roof, they’re even maturing the wine in a cellar under the airport.

Clever linear structures of precast concrete contain the soil and irrigation to sustain the vineyard and are held aloft by a network of branching columns, inspired by the vines they hold up.

The columns shade most of the terminal areas, keep the terminal below cooler in summer and warmer in winter and skylights will flood these areas with natural light.
