If you’re a regular pasta twirler, or you happen to always reach for the help of a knife, put the utensils down because according to etiquette expert William Hanson, we’ve all been eating pasta wrong!

Hanson has kicked off a rather heated debate on his Instagram page in a video which shows the ‘correct’ way to dine on some delicious pasta dishes.

The video, which has racked up over one million views, shows the Help I Sexted My Boss podcast host tucking into a big bowl of tagliatelle, and he demonstrated that you never need to grab a spoon or knife again.

You might think a spoon to help twirl the perfect bite would be the elegant way to go, but it’s a big no-no for William, who said to not “twizzle” the pasta, but instead leave the spoon to one side.

His second tip was to never cut long pasta with a knife to make it easier, in fact, do away with the whole knife in general, it has no place near a pasta dish!

The third and final titbit of advice from William showed the ‘true’ way of eating your spaghetti or linguine, and it’s all down to the fork placement.

According to the expert, the preferred method is holding a fork upturned in your dominant hand and going into the side of the pasta, making a nice little parcel, then simply leaning forward and eating.

William was sharing his top tips for pasta as part of the launch for Birds Eye’s new Steamfresh pasta meals, and it’s caused quite a stir online.

His Insta video has received over 35,000 likes and received thousands of comments. These instructions have been approved by many of his followers as one reacted with: “As an Italian I can only say: YES! That’s the way it is. As simple as that ” and another said: “This is the first thing that I’ve done that has been correct ”.

Not everyone is in agreement though, especially when it comes to the use of the spoon, with some debating: “But it’s so much easier with the spoon! ” and someone else questioning: “The spoon is ok, it’s a traditional and old-fashioned way used in southern Italy to help with the spaghetti; leaning forward instead is not ok, if you really want to follow the etiquette.”

There you have it! The most sophisticated way to eat your long pasta, and if you want more tips from William, he previously dished on the major dos and don’ts when enjoying a cuppa in a cafe.
