A wonderful and inspiring tech story from Kerala - where the best Indian food comes from - and some very clever engineers who’ve come up with a way to solve the water shortage crisis by pulling water from thin air and where did they get their original idea?

From Star Wars!

Say ‘namaste’ to Shrivastav, who won a student competition on the subject of tackling water scarcity, and armed with a hypothetical template from the original Star Wars films, Shrivastav and two partners set to work harvesting water from the humid air.

There’s an online Star Wars information hub called - wait for it -  ‘Wookiepedia’ - of course, and they looked up the so called moisture vaporator, a device used on moisture farms to capture water from a dry planet’s atmosphere, like Tatooine, where Luke Skywalker grew up. If George Lucas can come up with a feasible water condenser that pulls 1.5 litres of water out of the atmosphere every day, surely I can do better, he thought, and he did! His unit can produce a staggering 2,000 litres, or about 500 gallons of drinking-quality water per day. It’s not cost ready for home users yet but businesses have flocked to him because they value sustainability so much. He’s working on making them cheaper and he will. Watch this space.
