ITV drama Unforgotten continued last night (6th March) with episode two of series five, as fans continued to get used to the new boss.

Last week, the first episode of the new series introduced viewers to DCI Jessica "Jessie" James, played by Sinéad Keenan, who has taken over following the death of popular character, DCI Cassie Stewart, played by Nicola Walker.

There are spoilers ahead if you’re not up to date with the show.

Last night, we learned the name of the body at question in the new series. Precious Falade was a drug user who had been shot and shoved in the chimney. We also discovered that she was the daughter of Ebele, and when Sunny and Jessie showed the mum photo of the house where the body was found, she was clearly lying when she said she’d never seen it before. Intriguing.

Whilst the other, seemingly unrelated (but definitely related) storylines continued to unfold, Jessie was hardly winning any popularity contests, as she got the team’s names wrong and contributed pretty much nothing (to be fair, she’s having a nightmare with her cheating husband at home). At one point, it looked like she was going to knock on DCI Andrews’ door to hand in her resignation.

DS Fran Lingley (Carolina Main) said: “I’m not sure why she even bothers turning up,” and DI Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) did little to hide his annoyance with the new boss. After being told by Jessie off for getting on with the case with the rest of the team and keeping her out of the loop, he retorted: “When you’re actually in the office, I’ll certainly make sure they bring you stuff first.”

Jessie muttered that Sunny was a “d**k”.

Fans took to social media to redact to the less-then-friendly working relationship. One person said on Twitter: “I'm loving the animosity this series #Unforgotten”

Another said: “Sunny not worried about disagreeing with his soulless boss! Love that he’s not fazed by her. #unforgotten”

A commenter quoted one of Sunny’s zingers from the show, writing: “‘When you are actually in the office…’ unforgotten”

Another agreed, saying: “Sunny dropping the mic there #unforgotten”

Someone else wrote: “Jess cannot hurt Sunny. We fight for Sunny #Unforgotten”

Sanjeev Bhaskar joined the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with cinch yesterday (6th March) to talk about his character’s relationship with the new boss: “The previous boss and his friend and colleague and possibly love of his life, Cassie Stewart, sadly met her end at the end of series four. And this series is really Sunny kind of in grief. He hasn't recovered. He hasn't got over it. And someone else comes in to effectively take up her post. And he doesn't like her!"

Talking about the new boss, he said: “Sinéad is brilliant.”

He continued: “The worst thing they could have done would have been to bring someone in with the same energy and the same style. And the fact that they brought in a completely different character who's got a different energy that clashes with Sunny has been good.”

Unforgotten series five continues with episode three on Monday (13th March) at 9pm on ITV. All 6 episodes are available on demand on ITVX.
