We’ve all played Tetris, haven’t we? We’ve hummed along to the catchy music and felt the feeling of pure joy at making four rows disappear at once. Well, soon we’ll also be able to enjoy a movie about the game as well.

A film, starring Taron Egerton is coming to Apple TV+ next month, focusing on the history of the iconic game, and the first trailer has just landed.

Rocketman star Egerton plays Dutch entrepreneur Henk Rogers, who wants to get the international distribution rights and bring the game to the masses. He ends up in a high-stakes battle with the game’s inventor, Alex Pajitnov (Nikita Yefremov), the Soviet authorities, and KGB agents.

And that’s not to mention the fact that media tycoon Robert Maxwell (Roger Allam) and his son Kevin (Anthony Boyle) are also sniffing around, as is Nintendo boss Hiroshi Yamauchi (Togo Igawa).

Based on a true story, the film is set against the backdrop of the Cold War.

In the new trailer, Egerton’s character describes Tetris as “the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen. I played for five minutes, I still see falling blocks in my dreams.”

He continues: “It’s poetry, art and math working in perfect synchronicity. It’s the perfect game.”

Later in the trailer, we are introduced to a brand new handheld games console, called the Gameboy, and see Rogers venture to the Soviet Union, and all of the drama that the journey brings.

"You want to play with the big boys?" the main character is asked.

Tetris will also feature The Detectorists’ Toby Jones, as well as Ben Miles, Matthew Marsh and Rick Yune.

In a previous interview with GQ, the film’s lead actor said: “It’s definitely more Social Network than Lego Movie.”

Tetris will stream on Apple TV+ from 31 March.
