Several actors have portrayed Batman over the years but, for people of a certain vintage, Michael Keaton is the definitive caped crusader. And the good news is... he’s back!

Keaton first played the character in 1989 movie Batman and in the sequel, Batman Returns, in 1992. And now he is set to reprise the role in new film The Flash.

The story focuses on Barry Allen/The Flash, played by Ezra Miller, who uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. However, when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, he becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod (played by Michael Shannon, who is reprising role from Man of Steel) has returned. Zod is threatening annihilation, and in this reality there are no superheroes to turn to.

The synopsis explains: “That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?”

As well as Keaton returning as Batman, Ben Affleck will also star as Batman/Bruce Wayne in the film.

The official trailer for The Flash has now dropped. Speaking to Affleck’s character, Miller’s Barry says: “Bruce, I could fix things.”

“You could also destroy everything,” comes the response.

Later in the three-minute clip, we see Keaton back in the iconic batsuit.

“Yeah, I’m Batman,” he says in his gruff voice.

You may have also noticed the appearance of Kara Danvers, otherwise known as Supergirl, towards the end of the clip. The role is taken by Sasha Calle from soap opera The Young and the Restless, who makes her big screen debut.

In related news, Batman Returns star Michelle Pfeiffer has joked she has ‘no idea’ what she’s doing in a new Marvel movie.

The Flash will be released in cinemas on 16th June, 2023.
