Good news from Africa, where a tech startup is pulling CO2 out of the air and storing it underground in volcanic basalt.

Say hakuna matata to Tsavo and Amboseli national parks in Northern Kenya, whose unique geology makes it the perfect place for carbon capture projects and the latest will extract CO2 from the atmosphere then sequester it beneath the earth, where a geothermal plant will generate electricity. It’s a super sustainable model and Kenya are aiming to become the continent’s biggest exporter of carbon credits, but theirs are real, not like the dubious plant a tree schemes which will be good for the planet in fifty years time but do nothing to help right now when it’s most needed. They’re looking to do the equivalent of taking tens of thousands of cars off the road with each one of these plants and this won’t be the last!

Well rooted good news from the UK and another great thing to do with old Christmas trees.

On Wednesday I told you how they could help llamas and alpacas get a fresh source of vitamin C, now say hello to Rooted Christmas Tree Rental, in Yorkshire, who deliver you a potted Christmas tree, then they collect it and plant it to grow for another year, but here’s the really genius bit.

When the trees get too big for your sitting room, they transplant them to the slopes of nearby Calder Valley, where they act as natural flood-water breaks.

Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge, (which I know and love because that’s where my lovely friend Danny from Embrace lives,) have been inundated by serious floods 4 times in the last 15 years. The most recent flood caused a staggering £150 million in damage, so knowing your humble Christmas tree can help prevent that is a great feeling.
