It's the key to lower energy bills, says the money guru.

Martin Lewis has saved us all a few quid in recent years.

Now the MoneySavingExpert is warning us of a home appliance that's a huge drain on our energy bills.

Speaking on a new episode of The Martin Lewis Podcast, Martin explained that one of the worst energy-sucking "demon appliances" is a common fixture in many UK homes.

"Do you know what the real demon appliances are in most people's houses?" he said. "The one that you really don't want to use because it's really expensive?"

Tell us, Martin.

"Tumble dryers."

Martin went on to explain that the typical dryer costs up to £1 per load and that there are more efficient ways to dry our clothes, like a clothes horse.

He then went on to say that a dehumidifier could also save you cash on your bills when drying your clothes. Normally, dehumidifiers are used to help get rid of dampness in homes.

"Those who have dehumidifiers, that can take some of the moisture out," he said. "It's less wattage than a tumble dryer so it can be more effective."

According to The Sun, it costs 8.5p to run a dehumidifier for an hour, and a full load takes around 12 hours to dry. This means that, on average, it costs £1.02 in total for a full load.

To put that into perspective, a tumble dryer costs £1.70 an hour and takes two hours to dry a full load of washing - that results in a more expensive £3.40, in total.

This is of course just an estimate, other variables to consider include the brand of tumble dryer. Some are more efficient than others.

According to, the best value for money tumble dryer on the market right now is the Beko DTLCE80021W, which retails at £219.

The same site lists the Inventor Dehumidifier Fresh 12l/Day, at £143, the best value.

And a clothes horse? If you're paying more than £20 you're sillier than a mare.

Thanks Martin!
