We’re almost at the end of another series of the Great British Bake Off. Yes, it might feel like the bakers have only just entered the tent, but we’re now racing towards the semi-final, after the latest hopeful was sent home last night.

There are obviously spoilers ahead if you haven’t watched Tuesday’s (1st November) episode.

The Great British Bake Off's quarter-final served up three pastry-based challenges, and it’s fair to say that none of the remaining five bakers wowed the judges. Judge Prue Leith called it a “really disappointing” week.

In the Signature Challenge, the bakers were charged with making vol-au-vents, with Sandro struggling. Next, the contestants had a go at spring rolls in the Technical, with Sandro coming first, and Janusz scoring second place, even though one of his spring rolls mysteriously went missing. “I deep fried eight, and seven ended up on the plate!” Janusz told Prue and co-judge Paul Hollywood.

Lastly, the Showstopper Challenge saw the five hopefuls making pies inspired by a childhood story. Whilst none of the bakers blew the judges away, Syabira did enough to win Star Baker once again.

Regarding who was in danger of being sent home, it was between Maxy and Sandro, and it was Maxy who was eliminated from the competition.

She said: “It’s really sad to go, but I’m happy and I’m proud I made it this far.’

She later left a note on the Bake Off Twitter page, saying: “Along the way I have grown and become more confident as a person.” The baker also described it as “the best time of my life.”

Maxy’s elimination means that Syabira, Sandro, Abdul, and Janusz have made it into the semi-final.

With one more elimination next week, we will then be left with the three bakers who will be in the final in a couple of weeks.
