Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam has spoken about the major injury he suffered when filming Zack Snyder’s upcoming sci-fi film, Rebel Moon.

The actor revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he had been battling a number of health-related issues while working on his new series Shantaram for Apple TV+ following a spinal injury he sustained while training for Rebel Moon.

He explained: "I just finished doing the Zack Snyder film and got injured again. I have a totally exploded S1 [areas that effect the hips and groin] and S2 [the back of the thighs] that are torn wide open, a hundred percent dehydrated.

"It’s going to take two years to heal, and I have a 40 percent tear on the ligament on the right side that holds my spinal column in place."

The actor insisted it was nobody’s fault how the injury came about and was a result of the strenuous training he was doing for the film.

He continued: "I was training really hard for some big physical requirements that I had to do, but I had lost a lot of weight and not really been training for a few years during COVID.

"So then, really getting back to an aggressive regimen while not listening to my body or giving myself enough time to rest and trying to get as big as I could as quickly as I could, ended up just destroying my back.”

Rebel Moon originally began as a pitch for a potential Star Wars movie, but has ended up being a standalone film for Netflix and filming began back in April. The sci-fi is centred around a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy, which is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius.

In a desperate attempt to save their community, the civilians dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from planets nearby and help them form a rebellion to the regent.

Details about Hunnam’s role in the upcoming movie have been kept under wraps but he will be joining the likes of Anthony Hopkins, Dijmon Hounsou, Sofia Boutella and Cary Elwes on the cast.
