Stars of upcoming movie The Lost King assembled on the red carpet in London for the UK premiere last night (Monday 26th September), and virginradio.co.uk was there to speak to them.
The Lost King stars Sally Hawkins and Steve Coogan, and tells the true story of the discovery of King Richard’s III’s remains in 2012, when Philippa Langley - who was part of the Looking For Richard Project - used maps and fixed points to find his body.
Thanks to Philippa’s perseverance, the remains were found underneath a modern-day Leicester car park. Sally Hawkins plays Philippa in the film, and from the red carpet last night she exclusively told virginradio.co.uk about how she got into the role, and what research she did.
She said: “I had just a plethora of material really, and also what was very good for me was her audio… it was a lovely audio piece that I heard very early on, which is talking about her father, and that was a hook for me, her obsession and pursuit of the truth really… linked with her father and her past, that sort of was key for me.”
The award-winning actor continued: “There's always one thing that hooks you in and it's always different. I always kept going back to that, how important that was, to tell the truth above all else.”
“That's quite a through line for me, this driving force that it's a pursuit of that, and to honour yourself and to be true to who you are. And also not being afraid of your own intelligence. She's just a powerhouse in that way, not giving up.”
As well as playing Philippa’s husband John, Steve Coogan was a writer and producer of The Lost King. We also spoke to him on the red carpet last night, and you can read what he had to say about the "irresistible story" here.
The film also stars Harry Lloyd as King Richard III.
The Lost King will arrive in cinemas on 7th October.
