Tom Jones has left viewers of The Voice in tears after paying an emotional tribute to his late wife during the show.

The singing competition returned to ITV on the weekend (3rd September), with a whole host of new contestants chasing their dreams of becoming world famous musicians.

One of the best things about The Voice is also the moments in between auditions when the judges have some time to kill and often end up giving impromptu performances to the live audience.

During Saturday’s show, Tom took the opportunity to pay tribute to his late wife Melinda Trenchard, who sadly passed away in 2016 from cancer.

The couple had been together for almost 60 years and married in 1957 when Tom was just 16 years old.

As he sat in his judges chair Tom decided to perform a rendition of the song I Won’t Crumble With You If You Fall.

Speaking to the audience, he said: “Now this song is very important to me. I try to pick songs that mean a lot to me.

“And this song is trying to tell you that people that you love sometimes they need to be backed up. You need to give them strength and encouragement.

“My wife, you know, she was dying of lung cancer, so I said, you know, I was always able to fix stuff, to do things if she needed me I was always there.

"She said, 'Don't crumble with me, don't fall now, you've done everything you can, you must carry on and do what you do'. So I put the song, when I heard it, it was like it was written for this situation. It's a lovely song."

The music legend then went on to perform the song leaving fellow judges Anne-Marie, Olly Murs and will.i.am close to tears.

Viewers watching at home had a similar reaction and many took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the performance.

One fan wrote: “I cant think of any other 81 year old who has the power and tone of Tom Jones. What an incredible voice. Brought tears to my eyes. #TheVoiceUK.”

Another said: “Randomly put on #TheVoice and now I’m almost in tears at Tom Jones. What a voice he still has and 💔 about the story about his wife.”

A third wrote: “Tom jones just made me cry listening to him on the Voice 🥰🥰.”

While a fourth added: "The best thing about #TheVoiceUK is always when Sir Tom Jones performs. That was such a beautiful performance. He hasn’t lost that incredible voice of his. And what a moving story about his late wife."

The Voice continues on Saturday at 8pm on ITV.
