HBO has released an official trailer for its upcoming documentary about the rise and fall of Princess Diana.

Titled The Princess, the documentary will be released just before the 25th anniversary of the Princess of Wales’ death in 1997 and will premiere on HBO on 13 August.

The film is expected to chart some key points in Diana’s royal life, including her strained relationship with the media, her marriage to Prince Charles and their explosive split in 1992. It will also highlight how the paparazzi and media frenzy around her contributed to her untimely death at the age of 36.

In the teaser, a voice can be heard saying: “I think we’ve got an unhealthy obsession, and I think she’s very close to being a monster.”

Another says: “When you put a modern person in an ancient institution, they will be destroyed.”

It opens with a shot of a newly-engaged Prince Charles and Princess Diana and follows up with short clips of footage captured by the media during her time in the Royal Family, including the public’s reaction to news of her death.

An official description from HBO reads: “The Princess is a visceral submersion into Diana’s life in the constant and often intrusive glare of the media spotlight.

“The film unfolds as if it were in the present, allowing viewers to experience the overwhelming adoration, but also intense scrutiny of Diana’s every move and the constant judgement of her character.

“Through archival material, the film is also a reflection of society at the time, revealing the public’s own preoccupations, fears, aspirations, and desires.”

As previously mentioned, the film will be released on HBO on 13 August but if you don’t have access to that, a selected number of cinemas are currently showing the film.
