The trailer for Sylvester Stallone’s new film, Samaritan, has landed, and it shows the Hollywood A-lister playing an ageing and reluctant superhero.

The upcoming Prime Video movie will see Stallone as the ageing titular character, who was reported dead 25 years ago after a fiery warehouse battle with his rival, Nemesis. However, Samaritan is actually very much alive; he’s just hiding in plain sight as the reclusive Joe Smith.

When a 13-year-old boy called Sam Cleary (played by Javon "Wanna" Walton from Euphoria) suspects that his mysterious and reclusive neighbour is actually the superhero legend, he makes it his mission to coax him out of retirement to save Granite City from ruin.

The trailer shows that crime is on the rise and the city is on the brink of chaos, yet Samaritan is - at least initially - not interested in returning to being a superhero. “Kid, Samaritan is dead," Stallone’s character tells Sam. “I pick up garbage for a living.”

“Samaritan cleaned up the streets,” an undeterred young Sam responds.

“You mind your business, I’ll mind mine,” Samaritan says.

Later in the trailer, Joe says: “Things fall apart when you stop caring, and I stopped caring a long time ago.”

He adds: “For some people, it’s too late to change the damage they’ve done.”

The movie also stars Pilou Asbæk as a new crime lord, called Cyrus, who wants Samaritan dead. Martin Starr from Silicon Valley and The King of Staten Island’s Moises Arias also feature, as do Sophia Tatum from F9, and Dascha Polanco, who was in Orange is the New Black.

The movie is written by Bragi F. Schut, who previously wrote Escape Room, and is directed by Julias Avery, who also helmed Overlord.

In other superhero news, Dame Helen Mirren is set to star in new sequel movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

Samaritan arrives on Prime Video on August 26th.
