Colourful news from North and South America as the Monarch butterfly populations explode!

Butterfly populations have been suffering, and fluctuating wildly in recent times and entomologists mostly square the blame at chemical pesticides and loss of habitat, but a recent ban on many of those chemicals and with so many rewilding and replanting projects has seen their numbers increase in North America by a staggering 125 times!

This is having a ripple effect now as Mexico has just registered a 35% increase in these majestic monarchs.

How do they count so many butterflies though? The answer is simple, the migrating monarchs love to congregate on pine trees on their journey, so they count the butterflies on one tree, then just count the treetops from the air. This year they spotted seven acres covered, as opposed to 5.8 last year. As one of the world’s greatest migrating species, it’s great to hear them bouncing back so strongly.

The most brilliant news from Iceland, who launched a world first service to encourage visitors to switch off and properly enjoy their inspiring country, by getting a horse to reply to all your work emails while you’re there! It sounds like an April fool but it’s hilariously real, no spoof, all hoof!

It’s called ‘Out Horse Your Email’ and involves horses on giant keyboards, tapping out gobbledigook to your work contacts, and letting them know they’re talking to a horse.

Visit Iceland’s recent global study found that 41%) of people globally check their work emails between one and four times a day when on holiday, while one in ten review them 5-6 times a day. The service aims to raise awareness of this and deconstruct the ridiculousness of it, to encourage visitors to be more present and not to worry about work. The same study found that around half of people don’t feel rested after their holiday, so all they need to do, say Visit Iceland, is come stay with us and let us Out Horse your email so you can fully relax ;)
