Lady Gaga, Alan Carr and Dua Lipa lead nominations for British LGBT Awards 2022

The nominees for this year’s awards have been announced, and it’s going to be huge.

Every year, the British LGBT Awards sets out to celebrate those in the community and allies who have inspired and worked to support the rights of LGBTQ+ people in the past year.

Major celebrities such as Alan Carr, Olly Alexander, Dua Lipa and Lady Gaga have made the shortlist for the 2022 awards, and winners will be announced at the ceremony in June.

Nominated in the celebrity ally category are Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe, Ellie Goulding, Little Mix singer Jade Thirlwall, Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker, F1 star Lewis Hamilton and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Previous winners of the celebrity ally award include Spice Girls star Melanie C and Duke of Cambridge, Prince William.

Topping the shortlist for LGBT+ celebrity of the year is actress and singer Lady Gaga, alongside Billy Porter, Emma Corrin, Indya Moore and MJ Rodriguez.

Gaga’s success in the shortlist is largely down to her role as Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci this year, which has been nominated for a BAFTA. Also making history this year was nominee MJ Rodriguez, who became the first transgender woman to win a Golden Globe.

Battling it out in the MTV Music artist category is pop singer Dua Lipa, Sam Smith, rapper Lady Leshurr and iconic band Steps.

Nominees for broadcaster, journalist or host of the year include Alan Carr, Joe Lycett, Rylan Clark and Virgin Radio Pride's very own Shivani Dave.

British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enniful has also been nominated for special recognition award and journalist of the year after using his platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ inclusion. The journalist is also being recognised for his keynote speech during Pride last year, where he talked about the importance of diversity within the British LGBTQ+ community.

Shortlisted for Media Moment Prize is the BBC documentary Freddie Mercury: The Final Act, which homed in on the details of the legendary singer's life and career but also how the band dealt with prejudices following his death.

The first same-sex partnership on Strictly Come Dancing has also been nominated in this category alongside Victoria Scone’s appearance on Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK as the first-ever assigned female at birth queen to compete on the show.

Nominations for the Sports Personality of the Year award include Tom Daley, Colin Jackson, Beth Mead and Demi Stokes as well as the first transgender athlete to compete at the Olympic games, Laurel Hubbard.

Founder of the British LGBT Awards, Sarah Garrett MBE, said she hopes the awards will: “Shine a light on those who have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the LGBT+ community, during what has been another very challenging 12 months for the community.

“The nominees, which include an exciting mix of famous LGBT+ faces, allies, and organisations have all demonstrated a commitment to advancing LGBT+ rights. The awards on 24 June will be a huge celebration of our culture.”

Votes for the British LGBT awards can be made via their website, and winners will be announced during the ceremony.

The 2022 British LGBT Awards will take place on June 24.
