When Jamaica's bobsled team qualified for the Beijing Winter Olympics, it caused inevitable comparisons with the popular 1993 movie Cool Runnings, and the competitors at this year’s event are winning hearts, just like the Olympians who inspired the hit film.

Cool Runnings (pictured, above left) was loosely based on the true story of the Jamaican bobsled team’s debut at the 1988 Calgary Olympics, and the popularity of the movie has led fans of the Winter Olympics to look out for the iconic green, yellow and black colours of Team Jamaica ever since.

The two-man Jamaican bobsled team were in action this week. Unfortunately, things didn’t go too well for the duo of Shanwayne Stephens and Nimroy Turgott, and they almost flipped in Heat 1. They ended up coming 30th out of a possible 30 in both heats.

However, despite finishing last in the 2-man event, Team Jamaica was still feeling the love from fans across the world.

One Twitter User wrote: “Just watched the #Jamaica #Bobsleigh two-man heat in the @Olympics! Not the best showing but probably the most heart!"

Someone else added: “Got to smile seeing Jamaica in the bobsleigh.”

Another fan wrote: “Pretty hard to not root for Jamaica in the bobsled.”

Quoting Cool Runnings, a commenter said: “Feel the Rhythm! Feel the Rhyme! Get on up, It’s #BobSled time.”

And if you haven’t yet seen Team Jamaica’s bobsled team in action at these Olympics, then there is still time, as the four-man team, piloted by Stephens, is still to compete. It will be the first time that the four-man team has participated at the Winter Olympics since the 1998 Nagano games.

The four-man bobsleigh event will begin on Saturday, February 19th, so be sure to tune in to see some Fire on Ice!
