We only have a few days to wait until the much-anticipated last series of Ricky Gervais’ hit show lands on our screens, and judging by its trailer, it’s going to be a very emotional ride.

The third and final season of After Life will stream on Netflix from January 14th and, ahead of its arrival, the official trailer shows Gervais’ character, Tony, continuing to deal with the grief of losing his wife and then his father. “I’ve decided to go on a little trip, to scatter my dad’s ashes,” Tony says in the trailer, which goes on to show a montage of clips from the upcoming episodes featuring Ashley Jensen, Penelope Wilton, Tom Basden, Tony Way, and Joe Wilkinson.

The trailer also introduces some new characters, and flags a guest appearance from Cuckoo’s Kenneth Collard as an angry pub landlord. Other guest stars will include Tim Key and Kate Robbins.

The third season will see more footage of Tony’s late wife, Lisa, played by Kerry Godliman.

Referring to the emotions that he struggled with in the first two seasons, Tony says in the trailer, “I thought not caring was a superpower. I was wrong. Caring about stuff, that’s what really matters – kindness, making other people feel good.”

The upcoming series also gives a mention to key workers, with Penelope Wilton’s Anne telling Tony: “There are angels. They don’t have wings and live in clouds. They wear nurses uniforms and work hard to pay the rent on their houses.

“If you want to be an angel you’ve got to do it when you’re alive. Be good, do good things.”

You can watch the trailer here. Be warned, as well as being emotional, there’s some very NSFW language in it:

Even though it’s just a couple of minutes long, fans are admitting to getting emotional when watching the teaser for the new season. One person commented on YouTube: “Never has a trailer actually made me tear up, and that’s just what this has done. This series is so wonderfully made and has a perfect balance between comedy and tragedy. It's a perfect tv series and I’m so happy I’ve come across it.”

Someone else commented on Twitter: “In those two minutes I’ve laughed out loud and then cried. Utter genius, I can’t WAIT for the new series."

Another Twitter user said: “It's only two minutes long and I'm in floods already.”

Ricky had previously shared a song from the upcoming series on hisTwitter page, which includes the lyrics, “If you want to go fast, then go alone. But if you want to go far, go with someone.”

After Life season three will premiere on Netflix on January 14th.
