The Matrix Resurrections is almost here and, in advance of the film’s cinematic release in December, an official, interactive website has launched. While fans can expect to see a full trailer for the upcoming movie tomorrow (September 9th), for now they can look at not one teaser, but 180,000 of them!
Yes, that’s right. The Matrix has never been a franchise to do things by halves, and this new website apparently gives 180,000 possible variations of a teaser to look at, depending on what time of day you visit and, crucially, whether you choose the blue or red pill when you first arrive at WhatIsTheMatrix.com.
Choosing the blue or red pill was, as you may recall, the choice that was originally presented to Keanu Reeves’ character, Neo, way back at the start of the franchise in 1999. The blue pill means you stick to the reality you’ve always known, while the red pill suggests that you are ready to dive into the rabbit hole.
Each teaser on this new website lasts for about 40 seconds, and has a series of quick-cut shots from Resurrections in them. Every time a user clicks on a pill, the footage changes slightly to give a unique experience. All the teasers, however, seem to feature an ominous voiceover. Depending on which clips you see, you might get a look at Abdul-Mateen, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Carrie-Anne Moss or, of course, Keanu Reeves in the new film.
The Matrix Resurrections was directed by Lana Wachowski who, with sister Lilly, has directed all of the previous three Matrix movies. Lana will direct solo this time. It’s been 18 years since the last film.
The Matrix Resurrections will land in cinemas on December 22nd. While we wait for the first official trailer to drop tomorrow afternoon, have a look at the website and see if you can get any clues as to what will happen in the hotly-anticipated fourth outing of the sci-fi franchise.
But the question is, are you going to pick the blue pill or the red pill?
