We don’t know about you, but after watching movies on our tellies/laptops/phones for the past few months, we’re pretty excited to watch a few blockbusters on some massive screens in cinemas this year. And get ready to dig your full-length leather jacket out of the wardrobe, because blockbusters don’t come much bigger than The Matrix.
The latest installment of the hit sci-fi franchise is due to hit cinemas at the end of 2021, and Warner Bros. have announced, via a press release, that Christina Ricci will be joining the cast in the upcoming film.
The 41-year-old made her debut as nine-year-old in Mermaids, alongside Cher and Winona Ryder, but it was her performance as Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family which was her breakthrough role. She also appeared in Casper, before starring in some acclaimed indie movies as an adult, such as Buffalo 66, as well as films like Sleepy Hollow and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
She previously worked with Lana Wachowski, the producer, co-writer and director of the upcoming Matrix movie, on 2008's 'Speed Racer'. As yet, there is no indication as to how Ricci will fit into the Matrix universe, but she is generally known for playing somewhat unconventional roles.
Fans reacted very positively to the news, with one Twitter user saying, “Yeah let's go, she is a great actress!”
Another added, “Wasn't too sure after the lacklustre sequels but with Ricci involved it's become a must watch for me.”
Whilst we don’t know much, or indeed anything at all really, about the plot of the upcoming fourth Matrix movie, we do know that we will see Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprise their iconic roles from the previous films. The star-studded cast will also feature Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, and Jada Pinkett Smith.
The Matrix 4 is set to land on December 22, 2021.
