The bear can give himself a pat on the back after eclipsing Citizen Kane to be one of Rotten Tomatoes’ top-rated films of all time. Paddington 2 has locked a higher rating than the 1941 classic after the iconic film fell off its 100 per cent rating after unearthing a bad review from 1941. While the Orson Welles masterpiece is still a firm favourite, 2017’s Paddington 2 has taken its place on the Rotten Tomatoes podium.
Following the discovery of an 80-year-old bad review of the classic CK written by the Chicago Tribune according to Screen Rant, Paddington 2 now sits at the top movie spot.
The negative review that's tipped the scales is from May 1941 entitled ‘Citizen Kane Fails to Impress Critic as Greatest Ever Filmed’ and states: “It’s interesting. It’s different. In fact, it’s bizarre enough to become a museum piece.
“But its sacrifice of simplicity to eccentricity robs it of distinction and general entertainment value.”
Fans of Paddington 2 starring Julie Walters, Hugh Grant and Brendan Gleeson, wrote: "If you’ve actually seen Paddington 2, you wouldn’t see anything crazy about this at all."
Another commented: "They say 'new greatest' as if Paddington 2 wasn’t already the greatest."
One fan added: "Thank Cinema Jesus for that negative review where now instead of saying 'well, it’s no Citizen Kane' I can now say 'well it’s no Paddington 2, the benchmark of cinema'."
UPDATE: Paddington has spoken!
