The band released their darkest album, ‘In Utero’ as retaliation against their gained popularity.

Following the success of their previous album ‘Nevermind’ storming the charts and even knocking Michael Jackson from his usual number one spot, they felt they were no longer true to themselves and felt inauthentic.

‘In Utero’ became one of Nirvana’s most scrutinised album as they went against their record label’s expectations by creating a really aggressive punk rock album.

Kurt Cobain kicked off the album with the words "Teenage angst has paid off well/now I'm bored and old."

He proudly said that their new album was “the sounds we’ve had in our heads that we’ve never been able to transfer. This is the sound that we always thought Nirvana should have.”
