A documentary about Strictly Come Dancing professional Amy Dowden’s cancer journey is coming to the BBC, and it has now been confirmed when it will air.

The dancer was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in May 2023 at the age of 32, after discovering a lump in her breast the night before her honeymoon. She underwent a mastectomy last July, and battled sepsis, as well as a blood clot on her lung, before having what she hoped was her final chemo treatment in November. She missed the last series of Strictly due to her treatment, but did make an appearance in the final.

Amy announced in February that her check-up results came back with "no evidence of disease".

Now, a deeply personal and honest film will follow Amy through the most turbulent year of her life and track the battle for her health, her future family and a return to dance.

The one-hour programme, titled Strictly Amy: Cancer and Me, will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Monday 26th August at 8pm.

Filmed over 15 months, the documentary captures the difficult times, tough decisions and glorious moments, such as the Strictly family finding a way to include her in the dance in the series final at the end of last year.

The show also illustrates the unwavering support that Amy received from her family, fellow dancers, friends and the public, who messaged in their thousands.

Upon the announcement of the documentary, the dancing star said: “A year ago I was recently married and about to go on honeymoon, it was an exciting new chapter in my life, but finding a lump on my breast changed my life. I never thought at my age I would get cancer and, despite having family members and friends who were cancer survivors, had no idea just what the impact on my life would be.

“I’ve learnt so much about myself and what a cancer diagnosis means on this journey. I hope others find hope and strength from this film, and that it encourages everyone to check themselves, no matter what age you are.”

It is the Welsh dancer’s second personal documentary programme, following Strictly Amy: Crohn's and Me.

Amy will return as a Professional Dancer in Strictly Come Dancing 2024.
