Now, he's stepping into the shadowy world of Tony, a taxi driver with a fixation that's anything but ordinary.
In The Night Caller, Tony is a former teacher from Liverpool whose life has taken a nosedive. He's lost his job, his confidence, and his marriage.
His days of lecturing are behind him, and now his nights are consumed by a growing obsession with Rosa, a cafe worker played by Casualty's Suzanne Packer.
Adding to the mix is Lawrence, a late-night radio talk-show host brought to life by Sean Pertwee of You and Gotham fame.
Lawrence's voice becomes Tony's eerie nightly companion, spinning a web of influence that ensnares our troubled protagonist.
Buckle up, because this thriller is described as a 'claustrophobic tale about the power of influence those with the loudest voice have over the most vulnerable people.'
The Night Caller charts Tony's chilling journey as he finds the courage to call into Lawrence's show, feeling heard for the first time in ages.
But as Tony gets tangled in Lawrence's worldview, things take a dark and dangerous turn. What he discovers about his radio idol isn't quite what he - or anyone - expected.
Robert Glenister gave us a sneak peek into the psyche of Tony, sharing: "I was really intrigued by Tony and wondered why this man is the way he is.
"This is the story of a man who has suffered a major trauma that nobody knows about, plus he's lost his job as a teacher."
He continued: "He has chosen to work nights and when we meet him he's at a very low ebb. He feels like he has been thrown on the scrapheap and then he finds solace talking to the presenter of a late-night radio talk show, who gets inside his head. And then it all goes Pete Tong!"
Glenister also hinted at the complexity of the series, adding: "It was a bit daunting as a job because Tony is in every scene! But I also like the fact that the series starts as a thriller, and then becomes something far more involved, far more complicated and human.
"If the audience makes a decision about what the show is by the end of episode one they should keep watching, because the chances are the series is not what they think it is."
The Night Caller is all set to premiere on Channel 5 this Sunday, 7th July, so make sure you're tuned in from 9pm to catch the first heart-pounding episode.
And the thrills don't stop there! Viewers can binge-watch the suspenseful journey over the next four consecutive nights as it airs in the 9pm slot from Sunday 7th July until Wednesday 10th July.
So, grab your popcorn and lock your doors because The Night Caller promises a ride through the darkest corners of the human psyche.
The new series follows in the footsteps of other popular thrillers that have turned up on Channel 5 in the 9pm slot.
Earlier this year, Love Rat gripped viewers with its tale of recently-divorced Emma (played by Sally Lindsay from The Madame Blanc Mysteries), who enjoys a whirlwind holiday romance with charming hotel proprietor, Niko, on the paradise island of Cyprus.
When she realises that Niko and his partner-in-crime George have scammed her out of her life savings, she embarks on a dangerous mission to get her money back, aided by ex-husband Pete (played by Bob The Builder himself, Neil Morrissey)
Another Channel 5 offering from 2024 has been Cuckoo, starring Jill Halfpenny.
The drama erupts when a seemingly innocent decision to take in a lodger turns into a rollercoaster of chaos for Jessica (played by Claire Goose) and Nick (played by Lee Ingleby).
The Night Caller will premiere on Channel 5 on Sunday 7th July. Viewers can tune into Channel 5 from 9pm to watch the first hour-long episode.
