The comedy classic Happy Gilmore is coming back for a sequel, and Adam Sandler returns as the titular character.

Netflix has confirmed that the 1996 movie is getting a sequel. The streaming service made the announcement during its Upfront presentation to advertisers on Wednesday 15th May, confirming that Sandler will once again play Happy. In the original movie, the hockey player with anger management issues discovers he’s good at golf, with his unconventional swing meaning he could drive the ball incredible distances.

The narrative of the first film saw Happy join the golf tour circuit in order to try to win enough dosh to save his grandmother’s house. With his volatile temper clashing with stuffy PGA officials and other players, Happy ends up taking on smug, arrogant and villainous professional Shooter McGavin, played by Christopher McDonald, in the Tour Championship.

The first film was written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy and directed by Dennis Dugan. It also features Julie Bowen, Bob Barker and Carl Weathers in supporting roles.

Happy Gilmore was a big box office hit worldwide, so it’s little wonder that a sequel has been ordered. Perhaps it’s slightly surprising though, that it comes nearly 30 years later.

Having shared the exciting news at its Upfront presentation, Netflix then took to X to spread the word, writing: “Happy Gilmore is back! Adam Sandler will reprise his iconic role in a brand new movie coming to Netflix.”

No news has been announced about who, aside from Sandler, will appear in the sequel. There are also no plot details at this stage, an no release date.

The confirmation of Happy Gilmore’s second outing comes after rumours about it began to swirl last month, when Christopher McDonald said he had been shown a draft of the new script.

Drew Barrymore, who is no stranger to working on comedies with Sandler, then shared the - at the time unconfirmed - news on her talk show.

Sandler has certainly been finding the green lately, as he topped the list of best-paid actors of 2023, earning a massive £57 million.

Happy Gilmore 2 will stream on Netflix.
