Nicolas Cage set to play Spider-Man in new Prime Video series - all the details

Move over Tom Holland and Tobey MaGuire, Nicholas Cage is about to get his spidey senses on for a new Prime Video series. 

After becoming one of the biggest names in Hollywood, it seems the Face/Off star is now making a move towards TV, and has signed onto star as Spider-Man in a new show called Noir, which is set in the 1930s. 

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nic will play an “ageing and down on his luck private investigator” in 1930s New York, who is “forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.”

Noir will be produced by Sony and Amazon MGM Studios, meaning it’s part of the larger web of Marvel Universe stories which Prime Video is cultivating, with the streamer also making Silk: Spider Society.

Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, said during the Prime Video Upfronts in New York: “Expanding the Marvel universe with Noir is a uniquely special opportunity and we are honoured to bring this series to our global Prime Video customers.

“The extremely talented Nicolas Cage is an ideal choice for our new superhero and the accomplished producing team with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal and the incredible team at Sony is dedicated to expanding this franchise in the most authentic way.”

Spider-Man Noir (voiced by Cage) made his first film appearance in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2018, but no other details about co-stars, release dates or the plot have yet to be revealed. 

The National Treasure actor’s move into telly isn’t totally surprising given he recently confessed to only having “three or four more movies” left in him. 

In an interview with Uproxx in December, the superstar revealed why he wants a change, saying: “I feel I’ve pretty much said what I’ve had to say with cinema. And I’d like to leave on a high note and say, ‘Adios.’ I think I have to do maybe three or four more movies before I can get there.”

Cage added that he wants to, "say bye on a high note".

That’s not to say that the Oscar winner is planning on giving up acting entirely. Explaining what might come next, said he is, “very interested in immersion streaming with episodic television”. 

He explained: “I have seen things that can be done now with characters and the time they’re given to express themselves. I saw Bryan Cranston stare at a suitcase for an hour on one episode of Breaking Bad. We don’t have time to do that in a feature film, so maybe television is the next best step for me. We’ll see.”

Speaking about how finding an episodic show “that stays in one place where I don’t have to keep leaving, we can all be together” would be “great”, he added: “I’m a student and I don’t know if I have anything else to learn in cinema. I might have something to learn in television.”
