Ghosts actor Kiell Smith-Bynoe and Martha Howe-Douglas will trade Button House for a brand new home as they team up for another project.
Fans said goodbye to Mike Cooper (Smith-Bynoe) and Lady Button (Howe-Douglas) during the emotional Ghosts Christmas special in December, bidding a final farewell to all the ghosts as Mike and Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) moved on to the next chapter of their lives with their daughter.
As fans get used to life without Ghosts, it seems both Kiell and Martha will be making a big reunion - this time on stage for a new adaptation of The Government Inspector.
The satirical play, which is the latest reincarnation of Nikolai Gogol’s 1936 work, opens in May at London’s Marylebone Theatre, with Martha replacing previously announced Vicki Pepperdine in the role of Mrs Swashprattle, while Kiell will star as Percy Fopdoodle.
Martha said in a statement (via Chortle): ‘I am delighted to be joining the company of The Government Inspector - my first theatre role since 2003.’
The Government Inspector is set in a small town in 19th century Britain, where local officials mistake a habitual liar for a high-ranking official. The town’s corrupt governor then tries to bribe the stranger in a bid to cover up his crimes.
Kiell and Martha’s new starring role comes after their Ghosts co-star Laurence Rickard teased that the gang might be getting back together for a brand new project.
Speaking exclusively with virginradio.co.uk at the TV Choice Awards in February, the comic writer and performer explained that he and his fellow former Ghosts and Horrible Histories cast mates (informally often known as ‘The Six Idiots’) are in the "early stages” of working on a few new ideas.
“We hope [to collaborate again],” Rickard shared, before joking: “I mean, somehow, remarkably after 16 long years, we still all get along.
“For that reason alone, we keep trying to sort of invent ways to keep doing things together,” he added. “So we’re not quite sure what it is yet, it’s a few things that we’ve been sort of talking about in early stages, but I imagine there will be something more in the fullness of time.”
