She’s about to star as Emily Maitlis in new movie Scoop, but is Gillian Anderson set to reprise the role that made her a household name in the first place?

The actor - who has gone on to star in the likes of The Crown and Sex Education - made her breakthrough in hit sci-fi series The X-Files in 1993. There were a total of 11 seasons and two movies, and now a reboot is in the works. Anderson played FBI Agent Dana Scully alongside David Duchovny as Special Agent Fox Mulder.

While the show’s creator, Chris Carter, won’t be involved, Black Panther and Creed director Ryan Coogler is set to revive the series - with Carter’s blessing.

Speaking on American talk show Today, Anderson addressed the idea of her coming back as Scully: “It's so funny because for most of my life since I finished The X-Files, at every interview I do, people have asked and the answer has always been: 'Nope, not gonna happen.’”

However, she added: “Now Ryan Coogler, who's the director of Black Panther, brilliant, brilliant director, has approached Chris Carter to say that he wants to do a take on it, and I cannot think of a better way around for a reboot to happen. I think he's a bit of a genius."

She went on to say: "Whether I’m involved in it is a whole other thing."

However, the actor teased: "But I’m not saying no because I think he’s really cool, and if he did it, it would probably be done incredibly well, and maybe I’ll pop in for a little somethin-somethin.”

Meanwhile, X-Files creator Chris Carter has suggested that the reboot faces one significant problem. Read about it here.
