Wolf Hall’s Thomas Cromwell (Mark Rylance) and King Henry VIII (Damian Lewis) will be returning to our TV screens soon.

Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light will reunite viewers with the Tudor figures they came to know in 2015’s original series.

Based on the popular book series by Dame Hilary Mantel, this second series will take its plot from Mantel’s final novel (also named The Mirror and the Light).

The BBC and Masterpiece PBS today (3rd April) revealed some first look photos for the show, to mark the fact that the show had finished filming.

But what else do we know about the show? Virginradio.co.uk has all the details…

What is Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light about?

Several years in the making, Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light will pick up with its fictionalised retelling of the life of Thomas Cromwell by examining the final four years of his life.

The show’s official synopsis reads: “May, 1536. Anne Boleyn, Henry’s second wife, is dead. As the axe drops, Thomas Cromwell emerges from the bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen, Jane Seymour.

“Cromwell, a man with only his wits to rely on, has no great family to back him, and no private army. Navigating the moral complexities that accompany the exercise of power in this brutal and bloody time, Cromwell is caught between his desire to do what is right and his instinct to survive. But in the wake of Henry VIII having executed his queen, no one is safe.

“Despite rebellion at home, traitors plotting abroad and the threat of invasion testing Henry’s regime to breaking point, Cromwell’s robust imagination sees a new country in the mirror of the future. All of England lies at his feet, ripe for innovation and religious reform. But as fortune’s wheel turns, Cromwell’s enemies are gathering in the shadows.

“The inevitable question remains: how long can anyone survive under Henry’s cruel and capricious gaze?”

Who will star in Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light?

Alongside series leads Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Kate Phillips, Jonathan Pryce and Lilit Lesser are also returning to the cast as Rafe Sadler, Jane Seymore, Cardinal Wolsey and Princess Mary respectively.

Joining the show for series two are more big names, including Harriet Walter as Lady Margaret Pole, Timothy Spall as the Duke of Norfolk, and Alex Jennings as Stephen Gardiner.

When will Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light be released?

A release date has still not been revealed for Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light. With filming having just finished on the six-part series, it can likely be expected to air sometime in late 2024 or early 2025.
