Strictly Come Dancing star Amy Dowden has opened up about what she found ‘hardest’ about her cancer diagnosis.

The professional dancer was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in May 2023, and  underwent a mastectomy last July. She battled sepsis, as well as a blood clot on her lung, before having what she hoped was her final chemo treatment in November.

In February, she shared a heartwarming update with her fans, revealing that she is now free from evidence of disease.

Now, the Welsh star has spoken about her cancer journey in a segment on BBC’s The One Show. In a clip which aired on Tuesday (2nd April), she took mum-of-two Keren to a dancing session, called Move, Dance, Feel, which aims to help women undergoing cancer treatment reconnect with their bodies through dance.

In the clip, she said: “Taking the decision to shave my hair off was definitely the hardest step to take throughout my whole cancer journey, but I wanted to be in control.”

Move, Dance, Feel founder Emily Jenkins told Amy: It's really recommended by oncologists and cancer support teams to be physically active at all stages through pre-rehabilitation through to post treatment. But also to support mental health.'

Amy replied: “I found the mental, more [difficult] than the physical actually.”.

At the conclusion of the film, Amy said: “A cancer diagnosis is devastating but I'm in awe of all the women I've met,' Amy said at the end of the film.

“They're reclaiming their bodies, finding positivity and joy at the hardest of times.”

Over the Easter long weekend, Amy encouraged her instagram followers check themselves, writing: “Happy Easter! May you all have a lovely weekend with your loved ones. As it’s bank holiday it’s also the perfect time to #checkyourchest and my little Easter wish and reminder to you all 💖💝🎀.”

She added: “Oh can of course enjoy the chocolate! (a little reminder @coppafeel have lots of useful resources) 💖💝🎀. Wishing you all lots of health and happiness, Welsh love xxxx #check #raiseawareness #ifyournotcheckingwhois”

The One Show airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
