3 Body Problem has made it to the top of Netflix’s English language streaming chart, but what does that mean for the ambitious show’s future?

The mind-bending sci-fi programme which follows a team of scientists as they discover an otherworldly threat and work to fight against it has been watched by millions worldwide, but still has no confirmed future on the streamer.

Adapted by Game of Thrones’ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss alongside True Blood’s Alexander Woo from Chinese writer Liu Cixin’s original trilogy, 3 Body Problem’s first season only began telling the full story which those books tell.

If Netflix wish to renew the show for another season, there’s plenty more story to adapt. However, this fact could also act as the series’ downfall, as adapting the rest of this story will require a huge financial investment from Netflix - who have already poured more money into 3 Body Problem season one than any other first season they’ve produced (an est. $20 million per episode!).

According to Netflix, 3 Body Problem has amassed (as of 2nd April) over 15.6 million views, and Variety’s Luminate streaming statistics placed it at the top of last week’s streaming list, with over 1.6 billion minutes watched so far. These are impressive numbers, but they unfortunately still don’t necessarily secure the future of the show.

Still, it goes without saying that all of 3 Body Problem’s creative team want their series to return to the streamer for several more seasons so that they can finish adapting Liu Cixin’s famous trilogy.

Speaking exclusively with virginradio.co.uk at the show’s London-based special screening, Auggie star Eiza González hinted at the show’s plans for more seasons.

“I love Auggie, she’s a complex character… she has a very interesting arc and this is only the first season,” she said. “In the good old Benioff and Weiss fashion, you never know - one season one character is one thing, another season another.”

The actress added she was “so excited” about what future seasons might have in store for Auggie, but admitted there are no definite plans for more series just yet.

However: “We’re only in a very short span of the first book,” she stressed. “There’s so much more still to discover, we would love to get a second season. Hopefully people will check in and watch it and fall in love with it and give us the opportunity to keep telling this story.”

3 Body Problem is available to stream now on Netflix.
