Gogglebox viewers have shared their emotional reactions to the show’s heartfelt tribute to George Gilbey, who died aged 40.
The TV star, who appeared on the popular show with his parents, died after an accident at work.
In a statement, an Essex Police spokesperson said at the time: “We received a report of an incident at Campfield Road in Shoebury at around 10am this morning (27 March), during which a man who was working at height had fallen and sustained an injury.
“The ambulance service including air ambulance were in attendance. Sadly, the man died at the scene. We will continue liaising with partners including the Heath and Safety Executive. A cordon remains in place at the scene.” Police inquiries are ongoing.
George first appeared on Gogglebox back in 2013 with mum Linda and stepdad Peter, before landing on Celebrity Big Brother a year later. He returned to the Channel 4 telly-watching series in 2016, before leaving two years later.
Gogglebox continued its usually scheduled episode on Friday (29th March) and ensured to pay tribute to George by including a photo of the family together in the final moments of the episode.
“In loving memory. George Gilbey 1984-2024,” the on-screen title read.
Gogglebox fans were pleased to see the series pay homage to George, with one heartbroken fan writing on X (formerly Twitter): “Nice tribute to George at the end of the episode tonight. So sad 40 is no age. RIP George #Gogglebox.”
“Nice tribute to George at the end #Gogglebox,” another commented.
A third fan said: “My thoughts are with Linda & @georgegilbey daughter at this very sad time May George rest in peace, such a lovely chap and always a joy to see on the Telly RIP fella.”
When the devastating news of George’s death was first announced, the official Gogglebox account paid tribute via X, writing: “George was part of the Gogglebox family for eight series alongside his mum Linda and step-dad Pete. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Linda, and George’s family and friends at this very sad time. The family have asked for privacy.”
The thoughts of everyone at Virgin Radio continue to go out to George’s friends and family.
