Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington is just one of an all-star cast announced for the West End debut of Slave Play.

The play, which received a record-breaking 12 Tony Award nominations in 2019 for its Broadway run, focuses on the topics of race, sex, power and identity in 21st century America.

Kit will star alongside Olivia Washington - the daughter of award-winning Hollywood icon Denzel Washington - as one of the three interracial couples around whom the provocative and (to some) controversial play is based.

Heartstopper’s Fisayo Akinade and Brassic actor Aaron Heffernan will both also star, as will the play’s original Broadway stars James Cusati-Moyer, Chalia La Tour, Annie McNamara and Irene Sofia Lucio.

News of Kit and his fellow stars’ casting follows Slave Play playwright Jeremy O. Harris commenting negatively on the phenomenon of star casting in an interview with The Guardian.

“There’s a lot of people making theatre now who think commercial theatre can only be made if you have someone who’s on the biggest TV show or the biggest movie ever, with the marquee name as the reason for you to buy the ticket. I don’t believe in that,” he shared.

On casting Kit in his play, he continued: “Kit was saying ‘I don’t want this to be “Kit Harington in Slave Play”, this is an ensemble play and I’m not even the lead,’” which led the playwright, who was impressed with Kit’s past performances, to feel confident in casting him.

Tickets for Slave Play will go on sale on 28th February at 12pm. A limited number (30) of £1 tickets will be released every Wednesday morning during the play’s run.

The play will also host two ‘Black Out nights’ on 17th July and 17th September for Black-identifying audience members only.

Slave Play will run at London’s Noël Coward Theatre from 29th June to 21st September.
