Viewers of Netflix’s latest hit show One Day claim they’ve been “traumatised” by the show’s shocking final twist.

Warning: Spoilers for One Day below!

One Day follows the love story of Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) and Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall) who meet on their last night at university, 15th July, aka St Swithin's Day. The 14-part drama then continues to revisit the couple every year on St Swithin’s Day, tracking their life stories as they fall in and out of love.

The series - based on a book of the same name by David Nicholls - is currently trending number one on Netflix UK, ahead of other popular recent releases such as Griselda and American Nightmare.

However, the show’s penultimate episode features a devastating twist which has led some viewers to completely fall out of love with the series because of how upsetting it is. (Major spoilers for One Day follow!)

After a falling out between the couple in episode 13, things appear to be on the road to recovery between Dexter and Emma as they separately head off to view a property together later that afternoon. But tragedy strikes when Emma is involved in a cycling accident, and dies before they are able to reunite.

Fans of the show who have recently been bingeing the drama without knowing the plot have been completely devastated by this sudden twist, while people who were already aware of the plot were also left in tears again as a result of the show’s heartbreaking storytelling.

“Episode 13 of One Day is the actual worst,” one viewer wrote on X (formerly Twitter) after they reached the end of the show. “Why do I do this to myself,” another person wrote in reaction to watching the episode.

“One Day ended at minute 22 in episode 13, the rest does not exist,” a third fan wrote in denial about the programme’s tragic ending, while a fourth complained the show had “ruined [their] life” with Emma’s death.

“I watched One Day in four days and I’m still upset about it, I knew how it ended and I’m still traumatised,” another person penned. “Every edit I see on TikTok or Twitter makes me sadder, might rewatch Normal People again to switch up the cause of sadness,” they joked.

But while the show has left many fans really upset, it has also impressed the majority of its viewers. “One Day has to be one of the best, most unsuspecting emotional series I’ve seen on Netflix,” one person wrote on X. “The ending just left me devastated.”

One Day is available to watch now on Netflix.
