Peaky Blinders star to headline and produce new project.

Cillian Murphy, best known for his captivating performance in Oppenheimer and as the iconic Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders, is set to charm audiences once again as he takes on the lead role in the upcoming Netflix movie Steve.

The versatile actor will not only showcase his on-screen talent but will also step into the producer's shoes for the project.

The film, adapted from Max Porter's 2023 novel Shy, will be brought to life by Murphy's newly established production company, Big Things Films, in collaboration with his longtime creative partner Alan Moloney.

Netflix has given the green light to the project, which is expected to start filming this spring and will be available for global streaming.

Steve revolves around the life of its eponymous headteacher, portrayed by Murphy. As the head of a last-chance school for troubled boys, the character navigates the challenges of maintaining discipline while facing a personal mental health test.

The narrative unfolds over a span of 24 hours, offering audiences a glimpse into the struggles and triumphs of the school head.

The screenplay, penned by author Max Porter himself, deviates slightly from the original novel, transforming the protagonist from a 16-year-old student named Shy to the headteacher portrayed by Murphy.

The actor shared insights into the adaptation, stating: "The same events happen, we're just looking at them through a different lens."

Expressing his admiration for Porter's writing, Murphy revealed: "It's something I've always chased down in writing — is something that has an actual visceral effect on you, an emotional effect."

He recalled how Porter shared an early proof edition of Shy, which left a profound impact on him.

Murphy's collaboration with Porter extends beyond Steve.

They previously worked together on the 2021 short film All of This Unreal Time and a stage adaptation of the novel Grief is the Thing with Feathers.

Steve also reunites Murphy with director Tim Mielants, known for their collaboration on Peaky Blinders season three and the upcoming film Small Things Like These, set to premiere at the Berlinale on February 15.

As anticipation builds for Steve, Cillian Murphy continues to cement his status as a creative force in the entertainment industry.

Steve will be released on Netflix worldwide.
