Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant have reunited on screen almost 20 years on from when they last starred together in 1995’s Sense and Sensibility.

The popular actors are set to star in The Regime, a new political satire drama from Succession and The Menu scriptwriter Will Tracy.

In The Regime, Winslet stars as Chancellor Elena Vernham, a rather stuck-up leader of a fictional central European authoritarian regime. Grant plays the Leader of the Opposition in the country, whose imprisonment will go on to inspire public demonstrations against Vernham’s leadership.

A new trailer for the HBO drama was released on Thursday, 8th February, with the caption: “Her love knows no mercy.”

Referring to itself as a “darkly comedic six-episode series,” the show’s synopsis goes on to tease how Vernham’s world will unravel.

“After not leaving the palace for quite some time, Chancellor Elena Vernham (Kate Winslet) becomes increasingly paranoid and unstable and turns to a volatile soldier, Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts), as an unlikely confidant,” it says.

“As Zubak’s influence over the chancellor grows, Elena’s attempts to expand her power eventually result in the palace and the country fracturing around her.”

Alongside Grant, Winslet and Schoenaerts, Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough and Martha Plimpton have all also been revealed to be starring in the political satire.

While TV fans in the US will get to watch the new series from 3rd March on MAX, a release date for UK viewers has yet to be revealed.

The Regime will air on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK later in 2024.
