A new series of Grantchester is coming our way, but who is in it, and what can we expect to happen in the new episodes?

The series has run for seven popular series so far, and an eighth is on the horizon. Here’s everything you need to know about the new episodes.

When does Grantchester series 8 start? 

Good news, we don't have very long to wait before series eight begins!

After almost two years since the end of series seven, fans can finally catch up with Geordie Keating and Will Davenport when the first episodes airs on ITV1 Thursday 11th January at 9pm.

Is Robson Green in Grantchester series 8?

Yes, the actor will once again be back to reprise his role as DI Geordie Keating.

He is previously known for playing Fusilier Dave Tucker in the ITV military drama series Soldier Soldier in the 90s. Prior to that he played hospital porter Jimmy Powell in the BBC’s Casualty.

Is Tom Brittany in Grantchester series 8?

While Tom Brittany does indeed star in series eight of Grantchester, it'll be a rather bittersweet moment for fans as it'll mark his final outing as the fan-favourite vicar.

The actor will bid farewell to the show before Grantchester newbie Rishi Nair will star as enigmatic vicar Alphy Kotteram in series nine. 

Speaking in a statment announcing the news, Tom said: "I've had the most incredible time playing Will Davenport for the last five years. I got to solve crimes with my best friend, and work with the best cast and crew I could ever ask for. I'll miss it more than anything. But it's time for the baton to be passed, as it once was to me, and I'm so excited for Rishi to join the Grantchester family."

Who else is in Grantchester series 8?

Elsewhere, Ghosts star Charlotte Ritchie returns as Will's new wife Bonnie, while Tessa Peake-Jones is back as Mrs Chapman.

Al Weaver once again plays Leonard Finch, with Kacey Ainsworth as Cathy Keating, Oliver Dimsdale as Daniel Marlowe and Nick Brimble as Jack Chapman.

In terms of guest stars, keep an eye out for the likes of Top Boy’s Shaun Dingwall, Jeff Rawle from Harry Potter and Gold Digger’s Jemima Rooper.

What happens in Grantchester series 8? 

The official ITV synopsis reads: “Will is the happiest he’s ever been but his world will be rocked by a terrible accident. He’s always preached the word of a compassionate God – but how can he now, when his despair leads him on a dangerous downward spiral? 

“Geordie has found a new contentment in his relationship with Cathy, but when they are both confronted with shocking announcements at work their happiness is threatened. As Mrs C, Leonard, Jack and Daniel rally around, both Will and Geordie find themselves in unfamiliar, emotional waters and murder is always around the corner.

“The eighth season of Grantchester will range from Speedway to spies, exploring the lives of invisible women and the very visible problems caused by Leonard’s new vocation which may, once again, find him battling the law. Exploring faith, forgiveness, and redemption – this explosive series tests Will and Geordie to the limit.”
