Madness performed on the Virgin Radio Stool of Rock, where they played a stripped-down version of one of their most iconic tracks, and also delivered a brand new tune.
Suggs and Mike Barson from the band joined the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with cinch to talk about Madness’ 13th album, Theatre Of the Absurd Presents C’est La Vie, and to deliver a couple of tunes.
With Suggs on vocals and Mike on piano, the duo opened with their classic 1979 hit, My Girl, which spent 10 weeks on the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number 3. It was lifted from the band’s debut album, One Step Beyond.
Speaking about singing the paired-back version live version of the song with just one of his bandmates, Suggs said: “It's always a pleasure to do things acoustic because it makes you reflect a little bit on the original writing. You know, I mean? It reminds me of when Mike first wrote that. It’s a great song, even though we say so ourselves!”
Madness have just released their 13th studio album, called Theatre of the Absurd Presents C'est la Vie.
They performed as special guests on Strictly Come Dancing at the weekend, and Mike - who is also known by his nickname Monsieur Barso - said: "Strictly Come Dancing was great. I have to say that. Yeah. Those dancers are terrific. The ballroom in Blackpool was beautiful. So, it was very enjoyable.”
Suggs and Mike performed C’est La Vie, which is the lead track from the album, on the Stool of Rock this morning, (20th November). Have a look and a listen here:
The band’s 13-date 2023 Tour begins on Thursday 30th November in Aberdeen and runs until Saturday 16th December in Birmingham.
Speaking about Madness being around for the best part of half-a-century, Suggs said: “We have a lot of differences of opinion. I mean, we are still vaguely democratic, but it does take a lot of talking. We do a hell of a lot of talking.
“We do have to vote sometimes, which is difficult, because there’s six [band members]. It’s an even number now, It was better when it was an odd number!”
