Paw-shaped hearts have gone out to Gardeners’ World presenter Monty Don following the sad news that his TV sidekick dog, Nellie, has died.
The beloved family pooch, who often appeared alongside him on screen, had been diagnosed with cancer in June and he admitted that every extra day with her since had been a 'bonus'.
The Gardeners' World host, said: "Quite naughty - she was an arch thief who could melt your heart by gazing soulfully at you having nicked and eaten a freshly baked birthday cake left briefly to cool... But had not a bad bone in her body. We miss her terribly but celebrate the 8 years that she enriched our lives."

The green-fingered guru told fans on Instagram about his loss. He wrote: "I was going to tell you about my new book which is published next week but that can wait because my lovely dear Nell died last night. She was diagnosed with cancer in June and every day this summer has been a gift but it is over now.
"We buried her in the garden next to Nigel wrapped in one of my jackets with flowers, balls and her favourite biscuits. Her end was peaceful and dignified and ended obvious suffering but it never gets any easier to bear. So life goes on, but for the moment we are very, very sad."
Fans commented: "Such a loving look on your face in the first image. You can see she is well-loved."
A second added: "All the condolences in the world for your loss of beautiful Nellie, she was a joy to watch and a real entertainer and helper in the garden."
A third penned: "This has made me so sad for you all this week. But your tribute to Nell at the end of the show tonight tipped me over the edge and I did cry. It's so sad but Nell had a wonderful life with you all."

"Sending love to all of you. Ee just lost our fur baby a month ago. Grief is real," said one user.
"Beautiful gentle Nellie. We never know how long we’ll have them so cherish every day."
One fan penned: "Sending you and your family much love. There was a quote by Paul O’Grady which said that taking any animal into your life will inevitably end in heartache but you don’t worry about the hangover when you are at the party… So very true."

Another user admitted: "I cried for your loss. Animals give us so much joy and pleasure, but this is the downside of that pleasure. Beautiful Nell."
Monty showed his appreciation and wrote on social media: "Thank you for all your kind messages about Nellie. Today I shall plant primroses on her grave and take Ned for a long walk in the flood. She is gone but the love remains."
Monty most recently lost another one of his furry friends, Nigel, who died in 2020.
