Kate Garraway opened up about her husband Derek Draper’s health while appearing at the Pride of Britain Awards on Sunday night.

The ITV journalist and current Good Morning Britain co-anchor said that her husband, who has been unwell ever since catching Covid-19 right at the start of the pandemic, was “not doing great.”

“He’s not doing great, to be honest,” she told Metro while being interviewed at the 8th October event. “But the battle goes on,” she added defiantly.

In September, Kate revealed that Derek had fought “a nasty infection” which “set him back a bit” but was hopeful things were improving as she commented “we’re on the right side of it, so that’s good.”

Derek’s 13-month-long hospital battle with Covid-19 led to him being put in a medically induced coma and needing a ventilator.

As Kate has opened up about in the past, her husband’s illness caused long term damage to his organs, and has led to him needing 24/7 care at home.

Derek has also had to learn to talk again, and now requires a wheelchair to move around. Taking care of Derek has also caused strain for Kate’s own health.

Speaking with The Sunday Times in early September, Kate said of her husband: “I know I’m very lucky to have him alive. But yes, I’m also grieving. And also I don’t feel physically that strong.

“Caring isn’t just emotionally draining but physically exhausting,” she continued. “And I’m aware of the toll it can take on me, just like missions of other carers.”

Kate is a passionate campaigner for better help from the government regarding social care in the UK.

While appearing on air on GMB in September, she called for a private meeting with the Health Secretary Steve Barclay, a call which she has since revealed has been answered.

The Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards 2023 will be broadcast on ITV1 and ITVX from 8pm on Thursday, 12th October.
