There’s something fascinating unfolding in a chemical engineering lab in Massachusetts, where some very clever chemists are looking at a way for those ships collecting plastic in the pacific patch to make fuel out of the plastic they’re collecting!
Over the past several years, I’ve kept you in touch with every stage of Ocean Cleanup, the crowd funded cleaning of the immense country sized patch of plastic rubbish that’s been swept together by ocean currents. Experts said it would be impossible to clear it in a lifetime but a Dutch kid, Boyan Slat, decided they were wrong and he could do it, and he’s doing it, more and more with every new generation of ship. The problem they have though is the huge journey out there and back to refuel. But innovators at the Worcester Polytechnic realised that plastic and fuel share chemical bonds, so how hard can it be to turn one into another? They’re now building a reactor that uses something called ’hydrothermal liquefaction’ which, echoing the end of the 80s film Back To The Future, turns rubbish - in this case plastic - into usable so-called blue diesel. It’s early days but I bet the ocean cleanup people are watching this closely!

Yes, it’s time for a news pupdate from the US and a happy ending for a pair of gorgeous pups who had a really bad start to their lives.
Say hello to Ryder and Rane, a matching pair of beautiful snow white husky puppies…I say matching pair but the only difference is one of them has Bowie eyes, one brown and one blue.
Jackson County Animal Centre in Michigan are normally more concerned with animals breaking out, but these two adorable six month old pups, one boy and one girl, were found in their premises weeks ago. Their owner had literally thrown them over the fence. The poor things should have weighed between 25 and 30 lbs at their age, but they weighed a woeful 6 and 11 lbs only. With proper TLC the delightful doggos are now at healthy weight and on Monday they started their new life with grateful and loving pawrents, who won’t be slinging them over any walls!
