Gino D’Acampo certainly set the tone on This Morning today (Tuesday 20th June) after making some jabs about the recent scandal surrounding Phillip Schofield.

The Italian chef caused quite a stir on the set of the ITV daytime series after making his big return to the kitchen following the shock departure of Schofield.

All eyes were on the flagship programme after the longtime presenter announced he was leaving after 20 years on-air, before promptly quitting ITV altogether and admitting to an “unwise, but not illegal” affair with a colleague.

Phillip’s co-host, Holly Willoughby, addressed the controversy on her first show back earlier this month, saying she felt “troubled and let down” as a result of his conduct, but This Morning has continued as normal since the fallout.

During the latest episode of This Morning, Gino wasted absolutely no time referencing the scandal, and caused somewhat of an awkward silence in the studio.

He kicked things off: “I was in Italy for a month. I came back two days ago … any news? Anything from the last month that I should know?”

In an attempt to keep things light, Holly simply replied: “No,” before the studio fell quiet.

“Anything I should know,” Gino asked, before co-host Dermot O'Leary gave an awkward look to the camera.

The telly food expert then used his own recipe to joke about the scandal, adding: “I was going to make melanzane alla parmigiana, with the aubergine. But apparently, I can't do anything with aubergine at the moment so I'm going to make a tiramisu."

That aubergine reference appeared to be a jab at a comment made by This Morning boss Martin Frizell, who caused a stir after he was recently asked if the environment at the show was “toxic”.

He replied: “‘Do you know what’s toxic, I’ve always found toxic, is aubergine.”

Despite the strange atmosphere, fans seemed to find the whole on-air scenario amusing, with one fan writing on Twitter: “Gino asking if anything has happened since he has been away from This Morning .. very awkward face by Holly.”

Another fan commented: “Gino never disappoints, causing Dermit and Holly to squirm a bit making light of the Phil saga #ThisMorning.”

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV1 from 10am.
