The RSPCA has announced the Springwatch legend as its new president.

News of Chris Packham's new role was shared on the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ Twitter page.

The tweet reads: “🙌 We're absolutely thrilled to announce @ChrisGPackham as our new president!

“Like us, Chris is ambitious about animal welfare and with the huge amount we wish to achieve by 2030 and beyond, his passion and expertise will help us get there🤝”

The presenter has been teaching us about all things nature since appearing on CBBC’s The Really Wild Show back in the day.

He received a CBE in the 2019 New Year Honours for services to wildlife and nature conservation.

Having taken a break from TV presenting work earlier this year, he is back on the new series of BBC's Springwatch, alongside Michaela Strachan.

In a video posted on the RSPCA’s Twitter page, the new president said: "I am absolutely thrilled to become president of the RSPCA in this historic year - the countdown to its 200th anniversary.

“It’s been crucial in changing the way we live with, care for and think about animals. But there is still so much more to do. We’re at a critical moment for animal welfare, and the decisions we make will have huge repercussions.

“Letting sewerage pour into our rivers, where we decide to build our houses, decisions we make on how to power the country, all of these things threaten our wildlife,” he said.

Speaking further about how “the cost of living crisis is already impacting our pets,” Packham added: “The RSPCA has big ambitions for animals, but the most important thing of all is you. We want you to join us.”

After spending almost 15 years as RSPCA’s Vice President, Packham has campaigned strongly against numerous advocacy issues, including banning fox hunting and badger culling.

The RSPCA website says: “His proactive approach to educating the wider public about how to help wildlife, paired with his unmeasurable passion for the animal kingdom, positions Chris as an invaluable President.”
