Tom Hanks' wife Rita Wilson speaks out about apparent red carpet altercation

Following reports of Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson seemingly having a disagreement with a staff member on the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival, the actress and producer has cleared things up.

The duo were attending the premiere of Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, on Tuesday (24th May). Tom is one of a host of big names to star in the film, and walked the red carpet at the premiere with his wife, who is also in the movie.  

Pictures from the event show the Castaway and A Man Called Otto star embroiled in a seemingly heated discussion with a worker at the event. One picture (see above) shows the Hollywood star pointing his finger, while Rita also seems to cut a frustrated figure.

However, now the latter has taken to social media to give a simple explanation. Posting on her Instagram Stories, she explained that the discussion was simply born of confusion. She wrote: “This is called ‘I can't hear you. People are screaming. What did you say? Where are we supposed to go?’ But that doesn’t sell stories! Nice try.”

She added: “We had a great time! Go see Asteroid City!” 

Rita had earlier posted a photo of herself with her husband on the red carpet. “What a joy to work with Wes Anderson and Tom along with an extraordinary cast. Hope you see it,” she enthused.

The film’s line-up also features Scarlett Johansson, Hope Davis, Liev Schreiber, Jason Schwartzman, Jeff Goldblum, Margot Robbie, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Rupert Friend, Steve Carell, and Matt Dillon.

Stephen Park, Jeffrey Wright, Hong Chau, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan, and Stranger Things’ Maya Hawke also star. 

New clips featuring Tom Hanks and Scarlett Johansson have just been released. 

When he joined the Chris Evans Breakfast Show at the end of last year to talk about his film, A Man Called Otto, Tom revealed what makes him ‘flummoxed’ every day.

Asteroid City will hit cinemas on 23rd June.
